Jean Carlu is one of the pre-eminent poster artists of the 1920’s and 30’s. Coming from a family of architects, Carlu began his education as an architect but following an accident in which he lost his right arm, switched his focus to graphic design.
He worked in the strong Deco style but was also very much influenced by Cubism and the works of Juan Gris. Along with A.M. Cassandre and Paul Colin, he developed the highly popular clean bold poster style. Carlu recognized the importance of a clear image to fix an idea or concept in people’s minds.
Carlu was working in the United States at the outbreak of WWII and remained in the US until 1953. He created many powerful and well known anti-Nazi posters. After the war, Carlu did much work for Air France, Pan American Airways, and Firestone France.
