Marc Chagall (Moishe Shagal)

1887 Belarus
1985 St Paul de Vence, France

Marc Chagall, while primarily famous for his magnificent paintings and stained glass work, was also an esteemed poster artist. He studied painting in St Petersburg, Russia but in 1910, he left for Paris to become part of the growing art community in the Montparnasse district. He developed strong ties to the avant-garde artist, Leger, Delauncy, and Apollinaire. In 1937, he became a French citizen.

However, as a Jew, Chagall recognized that if he remained in France during WWII, he would face deportment. He fled France with his wife, escaping through Spain and Portugal, settling in the United States in 1941.

Following the end of the War and the death of his wife, Chagall became depressed and despondent. He returned to France, fell in love and his creativity was restored. His work from this period reflects the joy he was experiencing in love, life, and freedom. Chagall worked with free and vibrant colors and developed his characteristic curved floating figures. He produced many travel posters which employed this unique style.

About the Mourlot Editions...

"Walls have ears
They even have mouths;
Mourlot's posters
display some of their songs,
some of their cries."

Jean Cocteau

The Mourlot family has been associated with the graphic arts since 1852. Under the direction of Fernand Mourlot b. 1895 d. 1988, les Editions Mourlot rose to become what many consider the leading printer of lithographs in the 20th century, attracting major artists such as Matisse, Chagall, Leger, Picasso, and Miro.

Fernand Mourlot was the 6th of 9 children born to Jules Mourlot and Clemence Gadras. He attended the prestigious Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs studying drawing. His education was interrupted with the outbreak of WWI. Mourlot serveded in the French Army for 4 years.

Upon his return to Paris, Fernand and his elder brother, Georges, re-joined the family printing business. In 1923, they won a major contract to produce an original poster for an exhibition of French art in Denmark. Quickly, they developed a strong relationship with the director of the French National Museum and Editions Mourlot was given contracts to produce posters for all major museum shows.

By 1937, Mourlot Studios was the largest printer of Artistic posters in France. Fernand began inviting artists to come and work on location at his studio.

WWII dramatically halted the Mourlot's business but given the strong relationship that the brothers had built with leading artists, their business re-emerged strongly. Leger, Miro, Braque, Picasso, Dubuffet, and Chagall did some of their finest poster work the Mourlot Studios in the second half of the 20th century.
