Raoul Dufy

1877 Normandy, France
1953 Forcalquier, France

Raoul Dufy, well known for his paintings was also a poster artist of renown. Born to a family of extremely modest means, he was forced to leave school at age 14 to work as a laborer for a coffee importer. Four years later he began to study art in night school and in 1900, he won a scholarship to the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Dufy studied painting along with his fellow student, Georges Braque.

Dufy quickly established himself as a print maker and illustrator. After viewing an exhibition of Henri Matisse’s paintings he experienced a revelation and directed his interest to Fauvism, reflecting the Fauvists with bold colors and shapes. In 1909 he met Paul Cezanne and his personal style became more subtle. In 1920, Dufy experimented with the Cubist technique.

Finally he developed his own style for which he is famous. Dufy favors light color washes put on the canvas with swift brush strokes. Objects are arranged in a diminishing perspective. His work is both cheerful and highly decorative. Fine of examples of this can be seen in the posters, Le Paddock a Deauville and 40 Courses.
