Rene Gruau was perhaps the poster artist who best captured the spirit and the elegance of the French haute couture. He captured the glamorous world of high fashion. His models were elegant and sensual. Though born in Italy, he did most of his work in Paris with brief periods in New York and in Hollywood.
His work is simple but dramatic, capturing the essence and the feeling of whatever he drew. Gruau was highly influenced by Japanese drawings and by the work of the legendary early poster artist, Toulouse-Lautrec. At the beginning of his career, he was considered to be highly innovative. Gruau broke from the fine lines and delicate water colors that had been the vogue throughout the 1930’s, preferring heavier outlines and a more restricted palate.
During WWII, he lived in France illustrating fashion magazines such as Vogue and Marie Claire but his career really took off in 1947 when he met Christian Dior and created the magnificent Miss Dior image. Gruau did fashion drawing for most of the major houses of French couture including Givenchy, Balenciga, and Pierre Balmain.
In later years he created posters for major Parisian night spots such as the Lido and the Moulin Rouge. He also drew posters for many movies and ballets.
